Mermen Collect 25 Points; Eli Sets Two World Marks

Coach Hal Ulen's varsity swimming team upset tremendous odds at New Haven Saturday as it rolled up 25 points against Yale to lose by only 50 to 25. But the big news of the day was the two world records set by Yale's Australian freshman, John Marshal, in the 440-yard and 400-meter freestyle distances. The Yardlings lost to the Blue, 49 to 26.

Marshall topped the 440-yard record he set at Princeton last Saturday by 8 seconds, and was clocked on the way after 400 meters at 4:33.1, .2 seconds better than the world mark he previously shared with Japan's Hironoshin Furukoshi.

Crimson captain Joe Fox finished the season undefeated in the 50-yard freestyle. Bob Berke won the 440-yard freestyle for Harvard's only other first place in the varsity meet.

Three Yale times in the freshman meet were better than the varsity marks in the same events.
