Boston University, the third entry in the race, finished better than three lengths behind Harvard and Tech.
BU jumped to a quick lead at the start with a "windmill" 40-beat stroke. Harvard and MIT began with a 36 cadence and overhauled the inexperienced and disunited BU boat within a quarter of a mile. Then Harvard stroke Louis MeCagg eased the count to 31.
As the boats passed under Harvard Bridge, the Crimson led Tech by half a length.
