Bert Haines' varsity 150-lb. crew this afternoon will be out to do the same thing Princeton did last year--capture the all-eastern 150-lb. crew crown after losing the Big Three title.

Last season the Tigers, beaten one weekend in the H-Y-P Goldthwait Cup regatta by the Crimson went on in the next to polish off six lightweight crews, including Harvard, in the Wright Cup races. This afternoon on Princeton's Lake Carnegic, the Crimson will be out to follow Nassau's example, and Coach Haines has gone to the trouble of switching strokes in an effort to succeed.

Haines, not satisfied with last week's open-water loss to the strong Tigers, has replaced stroke Jack Smith with Jerry Wells, jayvee stroke and stroke on last year's championship freshman 150's. "We couldn't win with the other combination, and we'll see what happens this time," says Haines.

Tigers Favored

If anyone will be the favorite today, it is Princeton. Every eastern college boasting a lightweight crew--Harvard, Yale Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Cornell, and MIT--is entered, and of these crews none sports such an impressive record as the Tigers.

Undefeated since their Goldthwait Cup loss to Harvard a year ago, the Princeton oarsman are the defending champions. And besides the Wright Cup possession they also claim laurels from last July's triumph in the Royal Henley Regatta on the Thames River in London.

Unparalled Tigers

None of the other shells match the Tigers. Harvard has already bested Yale and MIT, and Princeton has beaten Penn and Columbia. That leaves Cornell the only unknown quantity.

Today's regatta will be run off under a system of heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon. Harvard has drawn Penn and MIT for the morning preliminaries and certainly stands a good chance of qualifying for the finals, since the first two boats in each heat will be eligible for the 5:40 p.m. championship race.

In the series, opened in 1938, Harvard has won four times, Princeton twice, and Yale once. No college outside the Big Three has ever held the cup.

Freshmen, Jayvees Also Row

Also entered in the championship competition today are the freshmen and jayvee 150-lb. eights. The '52 crew faces six other boats and should rule as favorite on the basis of its three-length victory last week over Princeton and Yale.

The junior varsity, also victor in its race with the Tigers and Elis, may be threatened by Penn.
