College Politicians Run Amok in Election Year

(This is the first of two articles on political organizations at Harvard).

Use All Supporters

The Wallaceites have no inhibitions as to the sources of their support. Margolis accepts the aid of any person or organization willing to further the aims of the Wallace movement.

This is important as regards College affiliations, for although much of the most vocal Wallace support comes from the 45-member HYD branch here, there is absolutely no organic connection between the two organizations. Margolis himself feels that because HYD is a more militant outfit, it is less effective. Furthermore he feels that HYD support leans heavily toward socialism, while the Wallace committee is interested only in "progressive capitalism." Only insofar as they support Wallace are they allied with Margolis.

The same goes for the College's small Communist cell, whose most active member, Geoffrey White '48, is also an active pre-Wallace man.

Communism and HYD

White's main contribution to College politics, however, is as president of HYD. This organization, whose parent national body was founded at the same convention which disbanded the young Communist League, is, by White's definition, "The only true Liberal force at Harvard." Its principles are labor, minority, and civil rights support, support of youth and student needs (guarding of academic freedom and fighting against discrimination), support of Big Three unity and the end of imperialistic U. S. foreign policy, and, most important, support of Wallace and foundation of a permanent third party in this country.

HYD members are active on several fronts in furthering these doctrines. They have been contributed to election work, the Wallace petition, and a publicity campaign for civil rights, as well as several rallies and forums. The embattled New Student is an HYD outlet.

In addition, almost all of the executive committee members of this group were delegates to the founding convention of the State third party last month, and have also been active in related political work there.
