Professor John M. Gaus attacked last night Ohie Senator John Bricker's declaration that states are losing their power to the federal government.

"Not only is Bricker's statement false, but the reverse is actually true," Gausdeclared. "The power of state and local governments in greater than ever before and is continually increasing." He explained that federal grants to state and municipal governments for purposes such as housing give these governments their power.

Assembly of States

Bricker and Gaus were members of a four-man round-table forum at the General Assembly of the States in Detroit over the weekend. The assembly is a biannual function of the Council of State Governments.

Bricker suggested that a commission be formed, similar to the Hoover group now studying the executive branch of the government, to investigate the divisions of power between the levels of government. Gaus commented that the proposal was "all right," but that it "wouldn't do too much good."

Maryland's Governor-elect and a newspaper writer were on the panel.
