Absentee Voting Rules

Idaho Through Oregon

MONTANA: Registration may be made by writing to the clerk of the county of residence at any time up to 45 days before the election. Qualified voters may obtain an absentee ballot by applying to the county clerk any time within 30 days before the election. Ballot must be notarized and returned to the county clerk before election day.

NEBRASKA: Registrations may be made by writing the City Clerk or the Elections Commissioner of the city or county of residence. Voting must be secret. The ballot should be notarized and mailed so that the postmark is not later than midnight of the day preceding the election.

NEVADA: Application for registration can be made by mail to the County Clerk of the place of residence or through a friend or relative. Application for an absentee ballot may be executed by mail or through a friend to the county clerk not more than 90 nor less than 3 days before the election. Ballots are to be notarized. All votes should be returned before the polls close on election day.

NEW HAMPSHIRE: Registration by mail is permitted if the Election Board is satisfied that the absentee is a resident. Application for an absent voter's ballot must be made to the city or town clerk, or to the Secretary of the State at any time prior to the election. Notarize the ballot and return before the polls close.

NEW JERSER: There is NO ABSENTEE VOTING in this state.

NEW MEXICO: There is NO ABSENTEE VOTING in New Mexico.

NEW YORK: Registration is required IN PERSON. A person planning to vote an absentee ballot may apply to the Inspectors of Elections at the time of registration. All ballots must be notarized and returned not later than the second Wednesday before elections.

NORTH CAROLINA: Registration is permanent and must be made IN PERSON. Application for an absentee ballot may be made not more than 30 nor less than 2 days before the election. Address them to the Chairman of the County Board of Elections of the county of residence. Votes must be notarized and returned to the County Board on or before election day.

NORTH DAKOTA: No registration is required. Application for absentee ballot should be made to the County Auditor in the county of residence within 30 days preceding the election. All ballots must be notarized and sent to the voter's precinct before closing time on election day.

OHIO: Registration for the election must be made IN PERSON. Previously registered voters may obtain absentee ballots by writing to the clerk of the County Board of Elections within 30 days of the election. Ballots must be notarized and returned before the polls close.

OKLAHOMA: Registration is permanent, but may be made by mail to the precinct Registrar of the voter's resident district. Veterans who have been previously registered may have their registration reinstated at any time. Application for absentee ballot should be sent to the Secretary of the County Election Board in the county of residence. Ballots will be sent to the voter during the 30 to 2 days before the election. Ballots must be notarized and sent to the Secretary of the County Election Board before the polls close.

OREGON: Registration is permanany time up to 30 days before the election. Applications should be addressed to the County Clerk in the county of residence. Ballots are to be notarized and returned to the clerk 5 days before elections.
