The first recipient of a scholarship established in memory of Newbold R. Landon '42, who died when his torpedo plane exploded after a direct hit by a Japanese anti-aircraft shell, is Charles R. Conklin '48, of Delta, Colorado, and the Brunswick Hotel, the University announced yesterday. Charles M. Gray '49, of Urbana, Illinois, and Kirkland House, was named as winner of the annual Jacob Wendall scholarship at the same time.
Formerly a chief yoeman in the Navy, Conklin spent 43 months in the service.
His scholarship is, under the terms of the grant to be given "to Juniors and Seniors seriously interested in classical thought with a special regard to traits of mind and character, and to their intention of studying law, or in exceptional circumstances following certain advanced courses to prepare them for service to the state."
The Wendell grant is given each year to a member of the Sophomore class who has achieved the highest scholastic record in his class as a Freshman.
