Dr. Eliot Blackwelder, formerly head of the Geological Department of the University of Chicago and recently engaged in research work for the East Butte Mining Company will be at the University and will take charge of several courses previously offered by Professor R. A. Daly '93, including "Introduction to Geology" and "Principles of Sedimentation". Professor Daly will be away with Professor Carles Palsche on the Shaler Memorial Expedition to South Africa; the latter will be unable to give his course on Non-Metallic Mineral Deposits on his courses on Mineralogy.
The History Department will suffer three losses this year. Professor Julius Klein '13 will be connected with the Department of Commerce; his course on the "History of Latin America" will be conducated by Mr. R. F. Arragon and his other courses will be omitted. Professor A. C. Coolidge '87 will be away on the Hoover Relief Expedition to Russia for the first half year at least. He will be unable to give his courses on "The Eastern Question", and on "Topics in European History, 1875-1912", and may be unable to give his course on Continental Europe; 1871-1914, and his lectures in History 1. Professor R. H. Lord '06 will be away for the second half year and will be forced to omit his courses on the "History of France in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries" and on an "Introduction to the Sources of Modern European History."
Additions to the courses offered by the Department of History include a course by Professor, W. C. Abbot on Modern Historiography, several courses on American History by Dr. Frederick Merk and two courses on the History of Religion by Professor G. F. Moore.
Professor A. N. Holcombe '06 and Professor W. B. Munro '99 will have joint charge of Government 1. Professor H. A. Yeomans '00 will be away this year and unable to give his course on the "Government of the French Republic and Germany". Professor Cottrell, former of Leland Stanford Jr. University, will give courses on the "National Administration of the United States" and on "Municipal Administration."
Assistant Professor J. S. Davis '08 will be away and unable to give his courses on 'Statistics" and "Accounting" this year; Professor E. E. Day, Ph.D. '09, will give the course on "Statistics", while Professor W. M. Cole '90 will conduct the course on "Accounting". Dr. Usher will take Dr. E. E. Lincoln's, Ph.D. '17, place in "European Industry and Commerce in the Nineteenth Century" and Dr. V. S. Clark will take Dr. Lincoln's course on "Economic History of the United States." Professor A. A. Young will be associated with Professor F. W. Taussig '79 in the course on Economic Theory. Assistant Professor J. H. Williams, A. M. '16, will offer a new course on "International Finance".
Exchanges in Social Ethics
In the Department of Social Ethics there have been numerous exchanges of courses between members of the Department.
Professor L. O. Cummings '10 is conducting the course on "Principles and Problems of Modern Education" in place of Dean H. W. Holmes '03. Professor P. H. Hawes has retired this year and will be unable to give his courses; Professor W. F. Dearborn is taking his place.
