Harvard missed an excellent chance to score when they had the ball on Yale's 8-yard line. A forward pass was tried, however, but went wrong. Yale also came near scoring near the opening of the game, when one of Howe's kicks went over Gardner's head and was recovered by a Yale man. Other than these two occasions was Potter's attempt at a goal from field there has been no chance to score. Yale and Harvard both fought hard and both elevens were playing splendid football. Camp and Felton shared the honors in the punting department as neither gained any material advantage in their kicks. Felton's punts went higher and were a trifle harder to handle than those of Yale.
Wendell was unable to gain consistently; only once did he get away for more than five yards. Both Harvard and Yale sang and cheered between the halves.
The red and white handkerchief "H" made a very effective display when "Marsellaise" was sung.
Second Half.
Smith kicked-off for Harvard to Spalding on Yale's 4-yard line. Camp tried forward pass which goes astray.
Camp punted to Reynolds who fumbled and Sheldon recovered for Yale on the Blue's 42-yard line. Spalding failed to gain around Felton's end. Camp again punted and Ketcham recovered ball which Gardner has fumbled on Harvard's 35-yard line.
Gardner has previously replaced Potter.
Spalding makes 2 yards through Harvard's right tackle. Hitchcock is hurt. Ball is on Harvard's 28-yard line.
Howe's Second Attempt Fails.
Howe tried a drop-kick, but the ball goes slightly to the right of the stands, no goal being made.
Reynolds is thrown for a loss by Gallauer. Wendell makes 4 yards on a fake punt, and Felton punted to Howe on Yale's 48-yard line. Philbin ploughed through the Harvard line for 6 yards. Philbin is used once more and makes 8 yards through Harvard's right side.
On the next play Philbin failed to gain through Fisher. Camp forward passes, but the ball goes outside and Harvard takes it on downs. Wendell failed again, as he was tackled by Spalding. Felton punts to Howe, who runs the ball in 15 yards. Philbin makes 5 yards through centre. Philbin on next play is thrown for a loss. Camp punts to Harvard's 48-yard line, where Huntington makes a fair catch. Reynolds loses five yards on an end run, but on the next play Wendell plunged through centre for six yards. Felton punts to Howe, who makes a fair catch on Yale's 40-yard line. Spalding makes two yards on a skin tackle play, and Camp adds five more on a fake punt, running through Harvard's right tackle. Camp punts to Wendell on Harvard's 40-yard line and Yale is penalized for 15 yards for interfering with a fair catch. Smith made 4 yards on an end around play. Wendell makes two yards on a line plunge. Felton punts to Yale's 8-yard line. Perry replaces Gallauer. Howe is tackled for a loss and Camp punts to Gardner on Yale's 50-yard line. A fake punt falls to gain for Harvard. Gardner worked a beautiful forward pass for 21 yards. Harvard penalized 15 yards for holding. Reynolds breaks through the line and made 19 yards before being thrown. Gardner failed to get a forward pass. Frothingham replaces Reynolds; Frothingham misses a goal from the field, ending the quarter.
Last Period.
Frances goes to left guard, Paul to left tackle and Potter at quarter-back, Reilly replaces Spalding, Reynolds replaces Frothingham.
Reynolds makes 5 yards, but Harvard is penalized 15 yards for holding. Freeman replaces Camp. A forward pass by Potter is intercepted on Yale's 20-yard line. Freeman adds 2 more through cen-er, and Howe punts out of bounds at Yale's 50 yard line. Reynolds fails again in trying to circle McDevitt. Potter punts to Howe on Yale's 30-yard line. Philbin made two yards through right guard. Freeman fumbles and recovers. Harvard is penalized 5 yards for offside play, giving Yale first down. Reilly gets away on a double pass for 13 yards. Howe tries an onside kick, but ball goes outside on Harvard's 30-yard line.
Wendell makes 20 yards through Yale's right guard on a fake punt. Felton punted to Yale's 50-yard line, but Howe recovered the ball on Harvard's 52-yard line. Howe tried an on-side kick, ball going to Smith on Harvard's 45-yard line. Reynolds made first down, circling left end.
Wendell ploughed through centre for 5 yards. Smith worked an end around play for 12 yards, taking ball from Potter who was faking a pass.
Wendell makes 5 yards through centre. Yale is penalized for offside play. The ball is now on Yale's 35-yard line. Wendell makes 5 yards through Yale's right guard.
Wendell makes first down for Harvard on a line plunge. Reynolds failed to gain. Potter tries a forward pass but ball is brought back. Potter tried a goal from the field on Yale's 40-yard line but the ball is blocked.
