CLOSE RACE WON BY THAYER

Russell Second in Final Inter-Dormitory Contest for Filley Cup.

Thayer won the inter-dormitory championship for the Filley Cup yesterday, in a race that was closely fought until the very finish. The race was rowed down-stream from Cottage Farm bridge.

At the starting signal, Randolph and Claverly got away first and led for about 50 yards. They were unable to hold this lead, however, for Thayer, with a short, fast stroke, quickly caught and passed them. Randolph and Russell, who were nearest the Cambridge shore then fell a little behind, rowing a slow, clean stroke. Claverly and Mt. Auburn street were following, nearly even, about a length of open water behind Thayer. Just above the Harvard bridge, Russell and Randolph put up the stroke, and gained rapidly on Thayer, but the latter was able to sprint although it had been rowing the same high stroke all the way. Claverly was not able to keep up with these first boats, and Mt. Auburn street, in turn, fell a little behind Claverly.

From this point to the finish, the race was almost bow to bow all the way, Russell gaining slowly, and Thayer just managing to keep its lead. Thayer crossed the line first, a few feet ahead of Russell; Randolph came third with about the same intervening distance, Claverly and Mt. Auburn street were about a length behind the winners, Claverly leading by about 40 feet.

Thayer rowed in the following order stroke, H. Eager '13; 7, C. W. Peabody '12; 6, H. Fowler '10; 5, H. Willis '12; 4, H. C. Borat '11; 3, H. B. Ehrman '12; 2, S. G. Sheald '12; bow, J. Eager '12; cox., A. Strauss.
