The twenty-third annual football contest between Harvard and Yale was played on Soldiers Field today in the new Stadium, which was used for the first time in an important contest. The almost total absence of wind, the bright sunlight and the crisp air, formed weather conditions that were perfect for a spirited contest. The crowd of 40,000 spectators which began to fill the immense stands for more than an hour before the game, occupied every available space and made a sight of unusual impressiveness.

The band started "Up the Street" at 1.53, and the Harvard side of the field took up the refrain with singing and whistling. At 1.55 the Yale team came on the field. Clarkson led a cheer for Yale while the Yale team was going through signal practice.

At 2 o'clock the Harvard team came the field. Clarkson led a cheer for the team.

At 2.08 LeMoyne kicked off to Farmer, who ran the ball back 15 yards.

Farmer makes two yards through right tackle. Farmer makes only half a yard at the same place, and Yale is forced to punt. Schoellkopf makes two yards through centre. On a trick play Captain Marshall runs around right end for 20 yards. Schoellkopf makes two yards through right tackle. Derby goes through right tackle for three yards. Schoellkopf makes five yards, but then Harvard is penalized ten yards for off-side play, and LeMoyne punts. Yale gets the ball on her own 40-yard line. Yale fails to gain through left tackle, but on the next play Hogan hurdles the line for two yards.

On a quarterback trick by Yale Marshall gets the ball on the 20-yard line, and advances it 15 yards. Derby gains 2 yards through right tackle. Schoellkopf makes 4 yards through right guard. Hurley makes 5 yards, through right guard. Schoellkopf makes two yards through left guard. Harvard is penalized 10 yards for off-side play.

Parkinson passes high to LeMoyne, who fumbles, but recovers the ball on Harvard's 35-yard line, but it is Yale's ball on downs.

Hogan takes the ball 3 yards through left tackle. Hogan makes it first down. Nichols is hurt. Mitchell fails to gain through left guard. Hogan gains 2 yards through centre.

Yale is penalized 20 yards for holding A fake kick by Yale fails to gain, and Mitchell punts to Nichols, who is downed on Harvard's 5-yard line. Nichols punts to Harvard's 45-yard line. In two rushes through right tackle Yale makes first down. From here, a long run by Mitchell around left end to Harvard's 4-yard line puts Yale in a position to secure a touchdown. Hogan makes 2 yards through right tackle. The ball is on the 2-yard line.

LeMoyne kicks off to Farmer, who runs the ball back 23 yards. Hogan makes 2 yards through left tackle. Mitchell makes 5 yards through right tackle. In two plays directed at Derby Yale makes 5 yards. Yale fails to gain. Hogan breaks through left guard for 3 yards.

Mitchell punts, but the kick is blocked. Mitchell recovered the ball, but Harvard received it on downs on Yale's 26-yard line. Harvard makes first down in three plays through right tackle.

Harvard has advanced the ball to Yale's 15-yard line in three plays. Knowlton goes through centre for 2 yards. In two rushes Harvard has brought the ball to Yale's 8-yard line. Knowlton goes through right tackle for 3 yards.

Hurley fails to gain through left tackle, and it is third down on Yale's 5-yard line, and 2 yards to gain. Marshall drops back for a try at goal from the field. Marshall drops the ball but Bowditch gets it again right guard for 5 yards. Hurley makes 2 yards through right tackle. On a delayed pass around right end Nichols makes 3 yards. Schoellkopf goes through right guard or 5 yards. Hurley makes 2 yards through right tackle. Schoellkopf makes 2 yards through left guard.

Marshall tries to run with the ball; but is thrown for a loss. It is Harvard's ball on Yale's 21-yard line.

From the 25-yard line Metcalf kicks out to Knowlton on Harvard's 25-yard line. Knowlton runs the ball back 13 yards. Nichols punts out of bounds, and it is Yale's ball on her own 38-yard line. Yale is thrown for a loss. Hogan fails to gain through the centre. Metcalf kicks to Marshall on the 38-yard line, and Marshall runs the ball back 8 yards. Nichols goes around right tackle for 4 yards. LeMoyne punts, and Yale runs it back to the middle of the field. Yale fails to gain. Hogan fumbles in the middle of the field, and LeMoyne falls on the ball for Harvard. Nichols tries a run around right end, but fails to gain. Marshall goes around left end for 25 yards. Time is up with the ball on Yale's 30-yard line.

The Harvard team is playing remarkable football. The offense is fast and aggressive. The defense is determined and effective, and forces Yale to kick repeatedly. Three times Harvard has got the ball within striking distance of the Yale goal. Once the ball was within Yale's 5-yard line, and, with but 2 yards to gain for first down, Marshall showed poor judgment in attempting a kick.

Yale's touchdown was chiefly the result of Mitchell's remarkable run around Bowditch, who was drawn in and put out of the defense. Yale has been on the defensive all the latter part of the first half, and it looks as if the Harvard team could win out in the second half if it keeps up its persistent attack.

The much vaunted attack of Yale has not proven to be especially effective. Hogan, while making at times short gains through the line, has not succeeded in accomplishing the results in the Princeton game. The Yale attack has been directed principally against Derby at left tackle, but Derby is showing a wonderful spirit of fight, and is holding his own fairly well. He frequently succeeds in opening holes through Hogan. Captain Marshall is playing a much more reliable game than hitherto this season. The most noticeable feature, perhaps, of Harvard's playing is the team work.

At 3.20 both teams are returning to the field. There are no changes in the Harvard team, and none in the Yale team. Metcalf kicks off to Bowditch, who gets the ball on Harvard's 20-yard line. Marshall is thrown for a slight loss. LeMoyne goes back to punt. LeMoyne punt to Harvard's 45-yard line. Yale fails to gain on a fake kick. Mitchell punts to Marshall, on Harvard's 5-yard line. Marshall runs the ball back 18 yards. LeMoyne punts out of bounds on Harvard's 15-yard line. Yale is evidently taking advantage of her punting ability to get the ball within striking distance of Harvard's goal. LeMoyne's punt is blocked, and Shevlin falls on the ball right behind goal for a touchdown. Mitchell fails to kick goal. The ball hits one of the goal posts and bounds back. Schoellkopf makes 3 yards through left tackle. Mills replaces Schoellkopf. LeMoyne punts to Yale's 15-yard line. Mitchell punts to Nichols on Yale's 35-yard line. Mills goes through Hogan to the 15-yard line. Two rushes gained only 2 yards. It is first down on Yale's 11-yard line. Nichols makes 2 yards through Kinney. Mills made 2 1-2 yards through centre. Third down, 1-2 yard to gain. It is first down on Yale's 5-yard line. Mills gains 1 yard through left tackle.

Nichols comes within a foot of a touchdown, but it is Yale's ball on downs. Derby is replaced by Squires. Yale's ball on her 1-foot line. Hogan carries the ball through right tackle for 5 yards.

Yale by strong rushing has advanced the ball to her 15-yard line. Mitchell falls back for a kick. Mitchell punts from the 5-yard line to Yale's 50-yard line. Marshall recovers the ball after a fumble by Nichols. LeMoyne's punt is blocked. Yale has the ball on Harvard's 24-yard line. Yale gains 1 yard by a straight rush through right tackle. Mitchell goes through right tackle to Harvard's 12-yard line. Metcalf goes through left tackle for 4 yards. Hogan takes the ball through right guard to Harvard's 5-yard line. LeMoyne kicks off to Metcalf, who brings the ball to Yale's 23-yard line. On a splendid tackle Nichols is hurt. Yale is penalized 10 yards for offside play. Goodhue replaces Nichols. Mitchell kicks from Yale's 10-yard line to Marshall, who fumbles, but Harvard recovers the ball on Yale's 35-ard line. Squires goes through right tackle for 15 yards. Goodhue goes through right tackle for 3 yards.

Goodhue fails to gain, and it is Yale's ball on 16-yard line. Mitchell punts from behind Yale's goal line to Marshall, who heels the ball on Yale's 43-yard line. He is interfered with, and is allowed a free kick from placement from Yale's 28-yard line. LeMoyne fails to kick goal. Mitchell kicks out to Marshall, who brings the ball back to Yale's 48-ard line.

Three rushes take the ball to Yale's 42-yard line. Goodhue makes 1 yard, and Mills makes 3. Squires makes 2 yards, and Mills goes through left tackle for 4 yards. Metcalf runs the length of the field with the ball, but is called back to Yale's 27-yard line. There was holding in the line. It is Harvard's ball on Yale's 27-yard line. Yale's ball on downs, Mitchell punts to Marshall on the Harvard 45-yard line. Soper replaces Rockwe BeMone punts from the middle of the field to Yale's 25-ard line, but is called back, and Yale is given, 10 yards for outside plan. LeMoyne punts again to Yale's 26-yard line.
