Sophomores, 8; Freshmen, 7.In an exciting game, which was won by timely batting in the eighth inning, the Sophomore nine defeated the Freshmen yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field by a score of 8 to 7.

In the first inning '99 started off with a rush, and, by the aid of Foster's error and wild throw to first, succeeded in bringing in two runs. After this, however, everything seemed to be in 1900's favor, as they played a strong fielding game and gradually worked their score up to six, while for six consecutive innings '99 was shut out. For seven innings Foster pitched a magnificent game. Five times '99 was retired in one, two, three order; but, in the eighth, Foster weakened, and Thompson's base on balls, Chauncey's and Nowell's singles, Stearns' triple and Mills'double, brought in four runs and tied the score.

There were still two innings for 1900, and from the strong game that they had been playing it looked as though they would win out; but they were easily retired in the eighth inning by two foul flies and a fly to McCall.

In the ninth, McCornick was substituted for Foster. Galbraith went to first on a dead ball and Jameson and Thompson struck out. Chauncey knocked out a neat single and the bases were full when Stearns got to first on balls. McCornick was unsteady and gave another base on balls to Mills, thus forcing in Galbraith. Another run was forced when McCall was hit by a pitched ball. Nowell struck out and the side was retired.
