RAIN STOPS BASEBALL.

'Varsity and Freshman Games Both Stopped in the Fourth Inning.

Only three and a half innings of the game between Harvard and Amherst were played yesterday afternoon, a heavy shower coming up suddenly and driving both teams off the field. At the end of the third inning the score was a tie-2 to 2. Harvard seemed to be playing rather better ball, however, and stood an excellent chance of winning.

The fielding of the team was much improved, only one error being made-by Scannell on a throw to the plate. Dean showed up well, accepting all his five chances. The rest of the team had little to do. The batting was fair, six hits being made in three innings, two of them by Haughton, who lined out a pretty double to left field. Paine did not pitch especially well, striking out only three men, giving two bases on balls and allowing three hits. He made a timely hit, however, over second base, sending Stevenson in.

Amherst played a clean fielding game, accepting all their chances, but they were weak at the bat and rather slow on bases, never attempting to steal.

Harvard made two runs in the first and second innings. Burgess flied out to center. Rand hit a high fly just inside the foul line over third base, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Haughton's two-bagger to centre. In the second inning Stevenson hit to left, and was sacrificed to second by Dean, who made a clever punt to pitcher. Chandler fouled out and Paine knocked Rand home with a clean drive over second.

Amherst scored both runs in the third inning. Foster struck out, Johnston got a scratch hit over first base, and went to second on Kellogg's being given a base on balls. Sullivan hit safely to Rand, who threw home, endeavoring unsuccessfully to cut Johnston off at the plate. Scannell muffed the ball and Kellogg also came in. The score follows:
