Many Changes Made in the Courses for Next Year.

Several other minor changes have been made in this department.

A few changes may be briefly noted in the department of German. Doctor Bierwirth retires from courses C and 1a, and succeeds Mr. Howard in 1c. He will also offer course 7, a new course on the German philosophical writers. Professor von Jagemann is replaced in courses 6 and 17 by Mr. Nichols and Dr. Poll. Courses 14 and 17 will be given during the second half-year; while courses 13, 21, 16, 19 and 18 are omitted.

The department of French offers several new and attractive courses. Professor Grandgent will give course 6c, a general view of French literature. Course 14, conducted by Dr. Marcon, will deal with French lyric poetry from Villon and the fifteenth century to the present time. Professor Bocher in courses 15 and 16 will treat respectively of French comedy and French tragedy during the 16th and 17th centuries. The latter course will not be given next year, but will be given in 1897-98. Courses 7, 9, 12 and 20a will be omitted, while courses 8, 10 and 20b will be given. Course 8, divided into two half-courses, will be given during successive half-years, and will deal with Voltaire and his contemporaries, and the Drama in the 18th century.

In the Department of Italian, course 3, treating of the literature of the 13th and 14th centuries will be given by Professor Grandgent.

Spanish 3, given by Professor Sheldon will be omitted next year.

Romance Philology 5, a half-course in Low Latin, is omitted next year; but course 6, a full course on old French dialects, will be offered by Professor Sheldon.
