Chess and Whist Club. The following rules have been adopted by the Chess and Whist Club to govern the whist tournament. In duplicate whist without "boards" or other system, some slight modifications are necessary:

I. It shall be the duty of each player to bring three packs of cards to the table. Twelve hands will be played.

II. After cut for deal, the first hand is dealt, and trump card turned. Each player places the card he plays face up ward before him. The side winning each trick takes one of a pile of thirteen counters in the middle of the table.

III. At the end of each hand the scorer, opposite the number of the hand, puts the whole number of tricks won by one side only (as A and B). See score sheet below.

IV. As soon as each hand is played, each player shuffles his hand and places it on the table or floor at his right, keeping hands in regular order. The trump card is turned on top of the dealer's hand.

SECOND ROUND.V. A. cut decides whether the cards in the second round are to be passed to the right or to the left. The trump card sufficiently indicates the lead. The score sheet is turned down so that the number of tricks won by A and B on each hand is invisible before and during the play. At the end of each hand, however, the number of tricks won by C and D is entered, and compared with the number won by A and B. on the first round.

VI. The second round of hands need not necessarily be played in regular order, but the players must know the number of the hand they are playing.

VII. The side gaining most points over its opponent's score wins. Ties must be played off.
