Harvard defeated Haverhill by a score of ten to three yesterday afternoon. The game was well played on both sides and was at times very interesting. Harvard did some good batting, making eleven hits with a total of eighteen. Wiggin's pitching, though a little wild, was very effective. Mason supported him well, stopping several balls that seemed sure to be wild pitches.
Harvard came to the bat first and went out on Hallowell's grounder to second, Mason caught off second, and Frothingham off first. For Haverhill two men struck out and the third went out on a fly to Dickinson. In the second inning Hovey scored on Barry's error, a stolen base and Cook's base hit. Barry scored an earned run for Haverhill on a single, a stolen base, and Gillespie's two-base hit. In the third inning Wiggin reached first on a single but was thrown out at second on Mason's hit to pitcher. Hallowell followed Mason with a home run to right field, bringing in two earned runs. Haverhill was shut out. In the fourth inning Trafford was hit by a pitched ball, reached third on a wild pitch, and came in on Paine's sacrifice. Haverhill was again shut out. In the fifth inning Harvard went out on a fly to third, a grounder to second, and a strike-out. Haverhill managed to get the bases full, but failed to score. Hovey opened the sixth inning with a home run to left field. The next three men went out. Lewis knocked a grounder to Cook, reached third on his wild throw, and scored on Barry's hit. In the seventh inning Paine knocked a two-base hit, but was forced out at third. Neither side scored. In the eighth inning both sides went out in one, two, three order. In the ninth inning Harvard scored five runs and Haverhill one.
