Harvard 12; U. of V. 1.

Harvard won her second game from the University of Vermont yesterday by a score of 12 to 1. The visitors were crippled by the loss of their captain, Abbey, but this did not excuse the errors made by the rest of the team. The game as a whole was rather slow, although the playing of the Harvard team was sharp. Bates was in beautiful form and pitched an admirable game, striking out eight men, and allowing but one hit to be made off his delivery. There were only three innings in which more than three men of the U. of V. came to the bat. Dean had an off day yesterday, fumbling three slow grounders. Trafford's muff at first and Upton's wild throw to second were the only other errors made by Harvard. The men had no trouble in batting O'Connor out of the box. His place was taken by Pond, who came in from right field. Alward and Hovey led at the bat with three singles each.

Harvard did all of her scoring by spasms. In the first inning she rolled up five runs on three bases on balls, hits by Hovey, Alward and Bates, two stolen bases and four errors. In this inning both Hovey and Frothingham were caught between third base and home; both of them scored, Hovey on a muff by third, and Frothingham on a poor throw by the catcher.

In the second Harvard went out in one, two, three order.

Harvard added three more runs to her score in the third inning. Alward hit a grounder to J. Allen who fumbled. Ranney tried to cut him off from second, but threw wild, allowing Alward to reach third. He scored on an error by the catcher. Meanwhile Cook and Upton had got to first base on balls, and they both scored on Hallowell's hit.

More scoring was done in the fifth inning, when Dean led off with a hit, took second on Hallowell's sacrifice and came home on a wild throw by the Vermont first baseman. Hovey and Trafford made hits, and Frothingham was hit by a pitched ball. This filled the bases. Alward came to the bat and knocked out a hit which brought in Hovey and Trafford, and advanced Frothingham to third. Cook hit to short stop and Frothingham started for home like a shot; the ball followed him, but he made a magnificent slide and saved his run.

The only run for Vermont was made by O'Connor in the fourth inning. He reached first on Dean's error, second on a wild pitch, third on an attempt to put out Stewart, and home on Upton's poor throw to second.
