The average of the first crew is 163 lbs., not quite as heavy as Yale's freshman crew averages, but this does not argue anything as to the race because more depends on form and quickness than on beef. Carpenter, L. S., has been coaching the first crew, while Captain Thompson has coached the second crew.
The men are looking well so far, and are doing good work. Their individual faults are:
Stroke. Captain Thompson is slow at the catch and in throwing full weight from stretcher; he is also behind on the shoot.
7. Waters drops at full reach and is very slow on the shoot.
6. Glidden jerks his arms at the finish and is uncertain at catch.
5. Fay tries to reach too far and so loses control of his body, and drops badly.
4. Bond is not steady with his oar and fails to get a good catch.
3. Johnson fails to get power on immediately at first of stroke.
2. Loring is slow at the catch and shoots slowly.
Bow. Blake reaches too far to control his body, and is very slow at catch.
The general faults of the crew which apply to every man are, slow catch and slow shoot; otherwise they row fairly well.
