Base Ball.

Harvard 6; J. P. Lovells 8.

The J. P. Lovell nine defeated Harvard on Jarvis Field Saturday afternoon in a game characterized by the loose fielding of the college team. Its batting was the only redeeming feature.

Harvard obtained a good lead in the third inning. Mason started off with a three bagger; Frothingham got first on the ineffectual attempt to put Mason out at the plate; Downer got first on a similar attempt to put out Frothingham at second; Frothingham took third on a wild pitch and came in on another attempted out; Dean made a three-bagger and brought in Downer, coming in himself on an error.

In the fifth Dean hit safely, stole second and came in on Trafford's hit. In the sixth Harvard went to pieces in the field and allowed the Lovells to pile up seven runs. McKee got first on Linn's muff, taking second on the play. Dean's error and two bases on balls allowed two runs to come in. Howland made an error, Dean and Upton made wild throws, Trask made a hit, and five more unearned runs were scored.

Harvard made an ineffectual attempt to tie the score in the ninth, but was unable to tally, although Mason, Frothingham and Linn made hits. The score:

Harvard, '93, 13; Brown, '93, 5.The freshmen found no trouble in hitting Sexton hard at Providence, while Howe was very effective despite the slippery state of the ball, due to a heavy shower just before the game. The team was cool at critical points, twice holding Brown down when the bases were full. The batting of Johnson and Hallowell, and the battery work of Howe and Stone were the features of the game.
