Yesterday the cricket eleven were defeated on Holmes by Longwood by an innings and four runs.
Longwood won the toss and decided to go to the bat, Mansfield and Bixby going in to face the bowling of Ellis and Brown. The batting of Longwood was very steady, but at no time brilliant. The chief scores were those of G. Wright, 20, and of Hubbard, 21, two very creditable performances, as the wicket was by no means a run getting one, and the bowling of Harvard was well on. The fielding of Harvard was fairly good, but lacked in throwing in to the wicket. The last wicket of the visiting XI fell for 78.
Harvard then went in, but, although most of the men played carefully, no one, with the exception of Ellis and Sullivan, was able to make any lengthy stay, the ninth wicket going down for 17. But the last partnership (Sullivan and Norman) put 13 runs together, the venture closing for a total of 30, Sullivan's 10, not out, being the top score. Harvard being forty per cent. behind her opponent's score, was forced to follow on, and did better than in her first innings. Brown batted carefully for his 14; Ellis also batted in good form. The bowling of Longwood was unusually accurate, and their sharp fielding saved many runs. Below is the score:
