The first of a series of College Conference Meetings took place last night, in Sever 11.
Professor Francis G. Peabody opened the meeting by explaining the purpose of the conferences. They are designee to bring the teachers and students closer together, and to give an opportunity to talk over the deeper issues of university life. The great trouble here at Harvard is the lack of "team play" among the right minded. There are many who have the best interests of the University at heart, but their efforts are less successful because they lack union. As time goes on, the tendency to deeper thought acquires greater strength. This is shown by the increase, this year, in the attendance at the services at Appleton Chapel, and by the greater receptivity and responsiveness of the students present at these exercises. Large plans for doing good are, also, being brought to the attention of the preachers to the University. The sense of personal responsibility is becoming stronger and more universal, and is especially noticeable at the present time, when the University is exposed to treacherous and malicious attacks from various quarters.
President Eliot followed with a short speech upon "College Loyalties." He showed how they are of ten perverted so that they produce harmful results. The proper objects of Loyalty were next pointed out, and Professor Peabody was requested to continue the subject.
The lecture room was completely filled with an extremely enthusiastic audience. Last year, five of these College conference meetings were given and they were so successful that it is proposed to give more this year. Professor Norton will address one of these meetings on Tuesday, December 4th. Several other gentlemen, some of whom are connected with the University, will speak upon other occasions.
