The freshmen, contrary to the expectations of the entire college, were defeated by the Yale freshmen on Saturday at New Haven. The game opened with Yale at the bat, who were retired in one, two, three, order. Smith got his base on balls, and went to third on a wild throw by Oliver. Nichols struck out, and Allen went to second on Oliver's wild throw. With two men on bases Chamberlain and Phillips struck out. In the second inning Yale was again retired without a man reaching first. Kimball and Edgerly struck out, Collins took his first on called balls, went to third on a wild throw of Bremer and scored on a fumble by Corkery. Bruner struck out. In the third inning neither side reached first. In the fourth inning Bremner went out on a fly to Phillips. Lang hit to Edgerly and went to third on his wild throw. Brigham hit to Allen, who threw the ball into the crowd behind first. On this throw Lang scored, and Brigham went to third. Dutcher hit to Edgerly who again threw the ball into the crowd, allowing Brigham to score and Dutcher to go to third, and finally scored. Marley struck out, Corkery flied out to Chamberlain. In the fourth inning Harvard was again retired in one, two, three, order. Odell made a hit in the fifth inning, but was left on second. Harvard was again kept from scoring in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning Allen made a hit, but was forced out at third while Yale was again unable to score. In the seventh and eighth but one man reached first for Harvard. Marley made a hit in the seventh inning, but was put out at second. In the eighth inning Yale went out again in one, two, three, order. In the ninth inning Yale made five runs. Lang got his base on balls, went to second on Brigham's hit. Lang and Brigham took a base on a passed ball. Dutcher made a hit on which Lang and Brigham scored, went to second on an attempted put-out, stole third, and scored on an error of judgement. Marley struck out, Corkery hit to third and was thrown out of first. Stewart reached first on a muff by Collins of an easy fly, went to second on a passed ball and reached third on a wild pitch. Oliver got his base on balls, stole second, and both Stewart and Oliver scored on Odell's hit. Bremner hit to short and was retired at first. The features of the game were the fine pitching and catching of Odell and Bremner, and the second base play of Phillips. Edgerly played poorly, two of Yale's runs being due to his errors. The score:
