The distance in putting the shot is measured by a line at right angles to the starting line, and not in a direct line from the place where the contestant stands to the place where the shot falls. The object of this is to compel the contestants to throw the shot straight, as otherwise they do not get the full benefit of their throw.

Considering the circumstances, the throw made by Mr. Follansbee in the putting the shot was an excellent one. As Mr. Follansbee throws in very good form there is considerable reason for expecting him to do good work on the grounds.

The officers of the meeting were: Referee - Dr. Dudley A. Sargent; judges - Prof. Wm. E. Byerly, Mr. E. W. Atkinson; referee of sparring and judge of fencing - Mr. John Boyle O'Reilly; judges of sparring - Mr. Clifford Brigham, Dr. John Bryant; judge of wrestling - Mr. W. A. Gaston.

The '86 Tug-of-War Team were over weight until the day of the meeting, on which they weighed exactly six hundred pounds.
