It is announced by Chinese papers that Mr. Yung Wing, who graduated at Yale in 1854, and has lived at Hartford until within a year, has, on his return to China, been appointed chief magistrate, or taotai, of the city of Shanghai. Mr. Yung Wing's case is remarkable, from the facts that he is a professed Christian, has an American wife and wears no queue.

The members of the University Crew of last year have each been presented with an elegant silver cup by the boat club, as a memento of their victory over Yale last June.

A petition to Prof. Hill asking that his lectures on "certain English Authors Considered as Masters of Style" be continued after the midyears, is being circulated in the sophomore class.

The following appointments have been made in regard to the law courses formerly conducted by Prof. Holmes: Suretyship and mortgage will be taken by Prof. Langdell; agency and carriers by Prof. Gray, and torts by Prof. Ames.

Trouble has arisen in McGill University between the medical students and Dr. Wright, instructor in Materia Medica. One hundred and forty-seven students demanded the resignation of Dr. Wright, and threaten to leave the college if their demand is not complied with.

At its meeting yesterday the Board of Overseers concurred with the president and fellows in the following appointments: F. A. Walker, lecturer on the tenure of land; G. Stanley Hall, lecturer on pedagogy; and C. P. Parker instructor in Greek and Latin for the current academic year. The board voted that it is not at present expedient to consent to the vote of the president and fellows to assign certain scholarships to special students.

At Cornell, two unexcused absences in any term of studies of two hours or less per week, and three unexcused absences in studies of more than two hours per week, will exclude a student from examination in that study at the end of the term.

The Spectator, speaking of the representation of the Ajax at Cambridge recently, says: "Some one said at the time that to compare the Oxford 'Agamemnon' to the Harvard 'OEdipus' was to compare a picnic with a banquet. If this were true of Harvard, it is equally true that the Ajax is well able to hold its own."
