Wretched is the lot of such a Freshman :

Can there be misery greater than this?

Seven long years must he love

Before he can venture a kiss.

O, where, where is the maiden fair

That would not a man despise,

Who, though he has all encouragement,

Simply looks his love with his eyes.

O maiden dear, be kind, and cheer

The miserable lot of such a one;

And try and do not encourage him

Just for a passing moment's "fun."

And do not, without a thought,

Receive his love with severe contempt,
