A COLLECTION of pictures to be sold at auction next week contains several interesting copies of old masters, and one or two paintings which are said to be originals by Paul Veronese.
THE plays given by the students on Friday and Saturday of next week at Parker Fraternity Hall, Boston, will be, Friday evening, "Babes in the Wood," and "Taming a Tiger"; Saturday afternoon, "Woodcock's Little Game," and "Never reckon your Chickens," etc.
THE setting of the south window of Memorial Hall began Wednesday. The paving cannot be finished before the 1st of June. The trimmings of red slate produce a very good effect, though we fear they will not wear well. The frescoing is to be completed within ten days.
THE annual lecture before the Harvard Natural History Society will be delivered in the lecture-room of Boylston Hall, on the evening of the 20th inst, by Professor Edward S. Morse of Salem. Professor Morse is an interesting lecturer, as well as a learned naturalist. The revival of these lectures, which for the past few years have been omitted, is a subject of rejoicing to all lovers of natural science.
THE Cricket Eleven will play a game with the Albions of Boston, next Saturday, on the East Cambridge grounds; wickets pitched at half past ten. The McGill cricketers could not make us a visit on account of the backward state of the season in Canada, precluding all practice; and also because the term of the Medical School, to which the best players belonged, has already closed, and the men have disbanded.
THE last concert of the series by the Glee Club was given in New Bedford on the evening of Friday, May 1. Although the voices showed unmistakable signs of excessive use, and, for that reason, the singing was not as good as is usually heard from the Club, the audience was evidently well pleased. "Ave Maria" was well rendered, though not so smoothly as usual." To Thee, O Country" secured its accustomed encore. The solo in "My Queen" was remarkably well sung, and in answer to a rapturous encore of the piece a serenade by Raff was given. The piano duet also received an encore. The college songs were given with great effect, one in particular seeming to be an especial favorite.
THE University Nine played the Freshman Nine last Saturday morning, and defeated them by a score of 10 to 4. The game was a short one and well played. The Freshmen, although short of two men, Thatcher and Leeds, who played on the University, managed to make the score a good one, being outplayed only at the bat. The Freshmen will probably play their first match game to-day with the Excelsiors, when they will appear in their uniform.
MR. NORTON delivered his second Lecture - The Works of Turner - last Saturday at one o'clock. He gave an interesting sketch of the history of landscape painting, and showed very clearly what was Turner's true position as an artist. The Trustees of Vassar College kindly sent on two valuable colored sketches by Turner's own hand; one was the Bernese Oberland and the other a Bacharach on the Rhine.
APPLICATIONS for entrance to the Anderson School of Natural History at Penikese number nearly 150, though not more than a third of that number can possibly be admitted. The necessary buildings have been erected, but there is very little money left to carry on the institution; it is to be earnestly hoped that many States will adopt the proposition to provide for the maintenance of two pupils by a grant of $ 5000 or an annual subscription of $ 350. The school is to be open from July 7 to August 29. The corps of instructors numbers about a dozen.
