THE OLD SPITTOON."It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing." - Macbeth.
A LETTER has been read by '76 from the Sophomore Class at Harvard, asking '76 to keep up the class ball Nine, and expressing the wish that the two Sophomore Nines may meet some time again. The communication has been answered by '76, in what way we do not know; but we hope our boys were not behind Harvard in politeness, and ask them to keep up the '76 class crew, that the two crews might meet again. - Yale Record.
We don't mind racing Yale; but confess, with sorrow, that our crew is not heavy enough to row against the Agawam ferry-boat.
THE following neat but gaudy puff of a contemporary is from a Western paper:-
The Waterville Telegraph has the appearance of being printed on shoe-pegs. It ought to be sent to Vienna. It would carry off the first premium for the most complicated puzzle. We recognize it, however, by the design of an auger-hole between two lines of mashed bugs at the head of the first page. - Courant.
THE Tripod gives us the surprising information that the Northwestern University will soon be the "richest on the globe," but growls that "it does not spend a cent for the support of its paper." Perhaps this is owing to the fact that the "Faculty and Christian students" are indulging in a religious revival, usually an expensive excitement. "The watchword is the NORTHWESTERN for God and His Christ." We now find the answer to that much-vexed question, Why does not God kill the Devil? Of course, he left him to be killed by the Northwestern University. Now, indeed, we are all safe.
(For the benefit of the curious, we will state that the Northwestern University is at Evanston. We learn from the title-page that Evanston is in Illinois; we regret that we cannot indicate its situation more definitely to our readers, as our latest atlas is only brought down to the year 1864.)
THE affectionate tone which marks Yale journalism is evident in the sentiments expressed at their suppers.
At the Record supper:-
12. - THE YALE LIT.
Go up, thou bald-head. - Original.
13. - THE OLD PORTFOLIO.
Afflicted, distressed in mind, body, or estate? - Liturgy.
