The crews got away pretty evenly. Holyoke had the inside position, Holworthy next, Weld third, and Matthews outside. From the boat-house, Holyoke seemed to have a slight lead when three quarters up the course, but no decided advantage was gained by either until the turn. Weld turned inside of Matthews, and both these crews left their stake ahead of the other two; but Matthews could no longer hold her own, and the Weld men forced their boat ahead. At the other stake Holyoke turned inside, and Holworthy so quickly after her as to strike her bow, when half round, against the starboard side of Holyoke. The delay was momentary, and Holyoke got away, making some two or three lengths. Now Holworthy pulled after her, gained, and when nearly even with her made a spurt which was not stopped until she had taken Holyoke's water and come much nearer Matthews. Another spurt, and she saw Matthews behind her; another, and Weld had lost her lead, and though trying hard to hold her position, and coming again nearly even with Holworthy, she could do no more, and Leeds, by another exceedingly good effort for the close of a race, crossed the line with the lead of a length. Holyoke came in last, disabled, having broken an oar when within about half a mile of the finish. She claimed a foul on Holworthy at the stake, by which the oar, afterwards broken, was cracked. The referee, on hearing the stake judge, allowed the claim. Holworthy was accordingly ruled out of the race, and the prizes given to the Weld crew, who came in second.
The next race for six oars was postponed twenty minutes, in the hope that the water would be less rough, but at half past four the thermometer in the judges' boat was so close upon the freezing-point that the boats were called and came into line:-
