Fists Will Fly at Boxing Club Exhibition Tonight

Everyone knows Harvard students are pros at hitting the books, but few are aware that the students can be just as good at hitting each other.

Tonight, the Harvard Boxing Club will put its talent on display at its second annual Exhibition Night. The event is free to the public and will take place from 7:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. at the Quad Recreational Center.

Last year’s exhibition that drew a crowd of about 150 spectators was the first of its kind for more than 30 years on Harvard’s campus. Once an intramural sport, boxing was relegated to club status after unruly crowds caused serious concerns at end-of- year House tournaments.

In tonight’s event, Boxing Club members will take each other on in seven different match-ups, some male and some female, consisting of three, two-minute rounds. The club’s coach, Doug Yoffe, will take his place in the ring as referee.

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons may warn that up to 90% of boxers sustain some sort of head injury or brain damage, but don’t worry. Harvard boxers will be taking all of the necessary safety precautions to protect their Ivy League domes.

And besides, they probably have a couple brain cells to spare.
