A man injured himself after firing a Boston Police Department officer’s gun outside of Massachusetts General Hospital – the largest teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School — on Tuesday morning.

The man, whom police said appeared to be experiencing mental illness, approached the officer around 8:42 a.m. on Tuesday. He was able to grab ahold of the officer’s gun after a brief physical altercation and discharged at least one round, shooting himself in the foot.

“He knocked the hat off of the officer, and got a hold of his gun, tried to take his gun,” Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said in a press conference following the shooting.

Other officers and pedestrians were able to subdue the man, and no one else was injured.

The man was arrested and is now being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The status of his arraignment is still unknown.

“We’re getting some update that maybe his mental health status might be impacting his ability to be arraigned at this time,” Cox said.

In a statement, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office wrote that it will “conduct a thorough investigation” into the incident.

“We are thankful that the Boston Police officers on scene contained the situation so that it resulted in no injuries to themselves or members of the public and apparent minimal injury to the suspect involved,” James Borghesani, a spokesperson for the DA, wrote.

The incident resulted in traffic disruptions near MGH for much of Tuesday morning. Michael D. Morrison, an MGH spokesperson, wrote in an email that “the hospital is open and operating normally,” but that patients “allow extra travel time for appointments due to increased traffic in the area.”
