Harvard Track and Field spanned the east coast over the weekend, breaking school and Ivy League records in the team’s last meets before the conference championship season begins in two weeks. The Crimson’s split teams traveled to the Penn Relays, Tiger Track Classic, and Ken O'Brien Pre-Conference Meet, seeing success at all three meets.

Penn Relays

Harvard’s weekend started early as some of the Crimson’s best competed Thursday through Saturday at the historic Penn Relays. The Penn Relays is the oldest track and field competition in the country and is composed of collegiate and high school level athletes.

Sophomore thrower Milina Wepiwé added to the history of the event by resetting the Ivy League discus record to 59.75 meters — surpassing her own record with this throw and claiming victory in the event.

While Wepiwé set the only school record for Harvard at the meet, sophomore distance runner Charlie Ortmans and freshman thrower Tyler Glover moved up the all-time school standings in their events.

Ortmans ran a 13:38.45 5,000-meter which was good for the third best time in school history and sixth place at the meet. Ortmans never dropped out of the top 15 during the race in a wire-to-wire performance.

Glover claimed another first-place finish for the Crimson in the women’s shot put. Glover propelled the dense sphere 15.12 meters. Her mark narrowly defeated the 15.10 meter second place throw and was good enough for the fourth longest throw in Ivy League history.

Harvard also performed well in the men’s shot put with sophomore thrower Isaac Delaney finishing third in the event.

The Crimson continued its throwing dominance with senior thrower Kenneth Ikeji — who placed second in his event last season at outdoor NCAA championships — launching his hammer throw 71.91 meters, over five meters further than second place.

Auburn Tiger Track Classic

Harvard sent a group of athletes deep into the heart of the south on Friday and Saturday to take on some of the best teams of the SEC and Georgia Tech. The Crimson had 14 athletes set personal records at the event along with two individual victories and one relay win.

Senior sprinter Victoria Bossong followed up her Ivy League record 1:59.48 800-meter race from last week with victory in the 400 meters that showcased her versatility.

Senior hurdler Chloe Fair won the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 55.85 that was also good for the eighth fastest time in the event this year.

Freshman sprinter Harlow Tong set a personal record and school record in the 400 meters. Tong ran the lone lap in 46.55 seconds; good for the best time in school history and fifth in a packed field that contained three of the 15 fastest times in division one running this season.

The men’s 4x100 teams claimed first and second in a small field.

Ken O'Brien Pre-Conference Meet

Harvard only sent three competitors to Amherst, Massachusetts, but all three returned to Cambridge with podium finishes.

Junior thrower Michaela Denson brought home the gold as the lone Crimson athlete in the women’s discus throw. Her 45.07-meter throw cleared second place by 0.4 meters.

The Crimson claimed two of three podium positions in the women’s hammer throw. Sophomore Alice Mihas launched herself to first with a 54.06-meter throw, and Denson claimed her second podium of the meet with a third place heave of 48.53 meters.

The Crimson are off next weekend before competing in the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championships held in New Haven, Connecticut on May 10th and 11th. Harvard placed second in men’s and third in women’s at last year’s championships.
