Harvard College Dean David J. Deming and Dean of Students Thomas G. Dunne opened their homes to students on Friday night, distributing candy and greeting them during Halloween festivities.

Several passersby stopped by Deming and Dunne’s houses — located in different parts of Harvard Square — to claim full-sized candy bars from the deans on a windy Halloween night. The event, dubbed “Trick or Treat with the Deans,” marked the first time Deming or Dunne distributed candy directly from their personal residences.

In his house outside the Radcliffe Quadrangle, Deming, dressed as a banana, gave out Starburst, Skittles, KitKats, Snickers, and M&Ms to students.

“It’s a fun thing to do for students, takes us back to our childhood, and it’s a chance to have a little fun,” Deming said.

Soren Cowell-Shah ’27 said the event allowed students to bond with Deming and Dunne over a light-hearted tradition.

Cowell-Shah was joined by Adam N. Chiocco ’27, who dressed as Harry Harlow — a psychologist known for his ethically controversial “wire mother” experiment on infant rhesus monkeys.

Chiocco praised Deming for providing ample supplies of candy to visitors.

“Full-sized candy bar is a good pull,” Chiocco said. “More candy is good.”

Meanwhile, Thomas Dunne and his wife Molly Dunne, a senior admissions officer at the College, called out to any passersby in the vicinity of their house on Dunster Street.

“Do you want some candy?” Dunne repeatedly said, brandishing a bowl full of Snickers, Almond Joys, and Twix as he wandered into the street looking to attract trick-or-treaters.

Robyn M. Boyland ’26 said the opportunity to trick-or-treat at Dunne and Deming’s houses allowed students to destress from the ramping up of coursework and exams.

“I think this is a great thing to keep spirits high amidst the fifth rounds of midterms, it seems,” Boyland said.

Connor A. Buchanan ’29 said he was thankful that Deming and Dunne welcomed freshmen to their homes while they navigated their first Halloween on campus.

“We’re in a new place, and so we don’t know where to go to have fun or go to trick-or-treat, other than the events that Harvard holds,” Buchanan said. “I definitely feel like it plays a part in making us feel more at home.”

Alex J. Johnson ’29, who was dressed as a Lucky Charms leprechaun, lauded Dunne’s assortment of candy.

“I love Snickers,” Johnson said. “Snickers are so good.”

Thomas Dunne and Molly Dunne said they cherished the opportunity to connect with students in an informal setting.

“We love living right in the middle of campus, and having students over to our house is the best part of the setup,” Thomas Dunne said.

“I love talking to students and hearing more about their experience here,” Molly Dunne added.
