A suspect was charged in connection with last week’s non-fatal double shooting at Donnelly Field and was taken into custody by the Cambridge Police Department.
Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, was charged with assault and battery attempt with a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and three other charges relating to his alleged involvement with the Donnelly Field shooting.
Cruceta, a Cambridge resident, allegedly fired his weapon following a brief interaction with multiple individuals at the basketball courts. According to a CPD press release on Tuesday, the department believes that Cruceta was not responsible for the injury of one of the victims.
“A 22-year-old female victim was also located in the basketball courts suffering from a gunshot wound believed to be from a stray bullet fired by one of the unknown parties,” the statement read.
Cruceta was also shot during the “exchange of gunfire,” along with a second individual.
As the investigation remains ongoing, the Cambridge police “do not believe that this incident was random.” City leadership — including Mayor E. Denise Simmons, City Manager Yi-An Huang ’05, and Commissioner Christine A. Elow — will hold a community safety meeting on Thursday night to share more information on the shooting.
