LIVE BLOG: Harvard vs. BC, Women's Beanpot Final

0:00 And that's a wrap. Stack's shorthanded goal was the difference maker, as the BC women throw off their gloves and storm Schaus in the net. Our final score from Matthews: BC 1, HARVARD 0.

Molly Schaus will receive the Bertagna Award as the tournament's best goaltender, while Kelli Stack gets the Most Valuable Player award for tallying the winning goal. Both choices are unanimous.

1:00 Danger for the Crimson, as they're stuck in their own zone without a goalie. BC almost makes it 2-0, but the Harvard D does a nice job of keeping the puck out. Kati Vaughn takes over in front of the net for a few secons before the Crimson regains offensive control.

1:26 Stone starts to pull Kessler, but the goalie gets stuck in the middle of the ice when BC gains control of the puck. After an icing call at 1:21, the Crimson will start off with an empty net.

2:58 Farni does a great job of cleanly tying up Stack on a 1-on-1.

3:18 Harvard almost got even on a shot from Randi Griffin, but the puck flew just wide of the top right corner.

3:46 Kati Vaughn gets one of the Crimson's best chances on the power play, launching a shot from the left corner of the zone. Schaus deflects the puck with her pads.

5:26 A delayed penalty is called on BC's Lauren Wiedmeier. Harvard's got two minutes of power play to try to even the score.

5:41 The chances are there for the Crimson, as the first line is generating a number of great shots, but none of them are getting past Schaus.

7:08 Harvard gets a couple of great chances as the power play expires. Schaus got her body in front of a rocket from Buesser, and the Eagle defense did a great job of dismissing a loose puck left in front of the net.

8:28 Bassett rips a shot from the slot that Schaus smothers with her knees. Harvard's got another 1:18 of power play to go, but BC's penalty kill is on fire.

9:06 Now facing a must-score situation, the Crimson is boosted by another Eagles penalty. This time, it's Fardelmann in the box for bodychecking. Harvard calls timeout to figure out how best to utilize its 35 seconds of 5-on-3 advantage. The top power play unit, which feature Vaillancourt, Brine and Bassett up front and Vaughn and Ryabkina on the blue line, is out on the ice for the Crimson.

10:09 BC 1, HARVARD 0  We're tied no more. BC's Allie Thunstrom stole the puck on a shorthanded breakaway, and sped up the right boards. Though Vaillancourt was there to tie up Thunstrom, she couldn't cover Eagle leading scorer Kelli Stack. Stack took Thunstrom's pass and put it in the back door, giving BC the first goal of the night.

10:31 Harvard's got another power play chance, as BC's Brie Baskin is whistled for hooking.

11:32 Molly Schaus even makes saves with her face. After a Wilson shot hit Schaus squarely in the facemask, McDonald and Buesser try to poke the puck in, but the netminder refused to yield.

12:30 Vaillancourt streaks up the left boards to get things started for the Crimson. Bassett lets off a long shot from the blue line that goes wide of the net, but Harvard's able to maintain offensive control.

13:36 Harvard's able to get some shots on Schaus, but the line of McDonald, Buesser and Wilson still can't put anything in.

14:06 Some guy in the press box just told me that tonight's attendance is a whopping 623 people. It's no sold-out TD Banknorth, but it's better than the 14 fans who showed up for the first game. (Slight exaggeration, but seriously - this arena was empty).

15:19 Chute gets an opportunity in front of the net, but she can't muster a good shot on Schaus. Harvard's top offensive line of Brine, Vaillancourt and Chute made some noise but they head back to the bench without a goal.

15:50 Now it's BC's turn to be upset with the officiating, as Eagles coach Katie King has words with the referee.

16:15 Wilson and Zavisza are tangling on both ends of the ice, but nobody is whistled. The back-and-forth play this period is currently centered in Harvard's offensive zone.

18:02 BC's Maggie Taverna takes a tumble chasing after the puck, as Harvard kills off Brine's penalty with ease. We're finally back to even strength on both sides.

18:57 For those of you keeping track at home, we're currently in 4-on-4 play here at Matthews Arena. BC's Zavisza got a solid chance alone in front of the net, but Kessler deflected the puck into the corner.

19:45 Trouble in front of the BC net. Jenny Brine knocks Molly Schaus on her back, and she'll face a two-minute penalty. Harvard coach Katey Stone, who already had tri-captain Kirsten Kester chat with the refs during the second intermission, is not happy.

THIRD PERIOD

1:30 to third: "Three Blind Mice" again. BC's cheering squad has been bolstered by some additional sign-holders, but the crowd still seems to be skewed towards the Harvard side.

6:30 to third: Let's put this game in context. The last time Harvard and BC met in the Beanpot, it was in the first round of the 2007 tournament. Then-freshman Schaus had an NCAA-record 73 saves in a triple-overtime thriller, and despite Brittany Martin's best efforts, Anna McDonald scored the game-winner near the end of the third overtime to send BC to the championship game. (They beat BU, 6-1, to take home the title). Schaus, who has since been named to the US National Team, hasn't lost that Beanpot magic, but the Crimson's hoping that McDonald can put in another game-winner—this time, sending the Eagles home unhappy.

Additionally, the Harvard band is playing the great ABBA hit "Mamma Mia" currently. Having sat through the musical of the same name approximately 17 times over Christmas break, I can certainly appreciate a good rendition of the tune.

END OF SECOND PERIOD: The pace of the game has changed, as both teams are getting frustrated with their inability to get the puck into the net. The game's gotten more physical, more penalties are being called, and the BC offense has woken up, outshooting the Crimson, 14-9, for the period. Kessler and Schaus are both playing lights-out in goal.

0:23 BC's Katie Kurth is in the box for high-sticking. The Crimson keeps it together in the last seconds of the 4-on-3, and we head to the break with the score still knotted at zero.

0:30 The trio of Brine, Bassett and Chute are holding strong, and there's uproar from the Harvard parent section after the refs don't blow the whistle after Jenny Brine is tripped up.

1:16 This could be trouble for the Crimson. Wilson joins her classmate in the box for hooking, and Harvard's facing 1:24 of 5-on-3 play with its best player unavailable.

1:53 After a long stretch of Harvard offensive attack, BC's Allie Thunstrom streaks up the ice. Kessler pins her high shot with her chin, but Sarah Vaillancourt is whistled on the play for bodychecking.

2:59 Junior defenseman Jen Brawn, who had her first goal of the season in the Beanpot's opener, does a great job of breaking up a Meghan Fardelmann breakaway.

4:05 As the power play expires, Wilson gets the puck all alone on a 1-on-0 breakaway. The senior can't stuff the shorthanded chance past Schaus, and we're back to 5-on-5 play.

4:43 This kill is looking much stronger for the Crimson, as it's able to disrupt BC's offensive motion and clear the puck.

6:04 Harvard misses out on its final 19 seconds of power play hockey, as junior Anna McDonald is put in the box for interference. McDonald is the only player on the ice to have had a hand in the last two Beanpot titles - she won the trophy in 2007 as a BC freshman, and after transferring to Harvard that fall, won it again in '08 as a member of the Crimson.

7:22 Ryabkina rips a high shot from the point. Schaus counters with a beauty of a glove save.

7:46 Brine's tied up in a 1-on-3 breakaway, drawing a penalty from BC's Colleen Harris. Eagle freshman forward Andrea Green was down on the play in front of her team's bench, but seems to be okay. The Crimson now has a power-play chance of its own to try to get on the board.

8:44 Another scrum in front of the net and another close call for Kessler. The junior protected her turf, and the power play is now ticking down.

9:17 BC almost got on the board, as the puck bounced around the crease for a few seconds, nearly crossing the goal line. Kessler and the Harvard D were on their toes and kept the puck out of the net, btu BC's found some momentum and is out firing on this power play.

9:55 Another break for the Eagles, as this time it's Farni heading to the box after checking a BC player into the boards.

11:46 Bassett's out of the box, and we're back to even strength. Eagle Zavisza streaks up the ice but can't get the puck around Kessler's pads.

12:53 Coskren clears the puck, allowing the Crimson to get some fresh legs on the ice. The team's having a great kill so far.

13:51 BC's going to get its first power play chance of the evening, as Bassett is whistled for tripping. Harvard starts the kill strong, clearing the puck out of the defensive zone.

14:16 The band bursts out with Flo Rida's "Low."

15:10 BC junior Allie Thunstrom gets around a couple of Crimson defenders, but Kessler stops play with a chest save.

16:09 Wilson breaks away up the right side of the ice, but Schaus sends the puck away with a stick save. Buesser picks it up and brings it in, but can't get the puck across the goal line.

17:01 Brine gets off a good backhanded shot, but Schaus is there once again.

17:52 Ryabkina speeds up the ice and tries to pass the puck over to a linemate, but no dice. The puck dribbles away into the corner.

18:10 The Crimson starts off in control, as it's been moving around in its own offensive zone for the first 90 seconds of the period. BC finally clears and gets a shot off, but Kessler kills the puck with her glove.

20:00 Brine gets the second period started off right, winning the faceoff with BC star forward Kelli Stack.

SECOND PERIOD

1:43 to second: As the refs come back out on the ice, the lone BC trumpeter delivers a stirring rendition of "Three Blind Mice." What?

6:00 to second period: So the Harvard band is out in full force, currently rocking out to It's Raining Men. BC's band? Nowhere in sight. What the Eagles do have are a couple of jersey-clad guys who have taped up a "Sting the WASPs" sign. Point to Harvard.

Also, a statistical update: The Crimson outshot BC, 19-6, in the first.

END OF FIRST PERIOD: Well, this certainly isn't going to be another rendition of the offensive show the Crimson put on last week. Both teams came out ready, and though Harvard did a great job of keeping the puck in the Eagles' zone for most of the second half of the frame, Schaus and her defense held strong.

1:07 Vaillancourt takes a shot from the left circle, and the rebound sits right in front of the net. No Crimson skater ist here, though, and the BC defense sweeps it away.

2:36 Farni gets off a shot, but Schaus deflects it off her pads. The rebound chance is blocked as well, and BC comes tearing into the Harvard end. Kessler's tested twice, but protects the net with two quick saves.

4:16 The Eagles get a shot on goal, but Kessler's there for the easy save.

5:13 Senior Sarah Wilson, last year's Beanpot MVP, goes chasing after a loose puck in the BC zone. Eagle Katelyn Kurth gets a stick on it first to erase the breakaway.

5:44 Huge chance for the Crimson. Vaillancourt takes a shot from just outside the crease, but Schaus is able to knock the puck into the corner with her stick arm.

7:24 Sophomore Kate Buesser is fed the puck right in front of the net, but she can't get a stick on it.

9:29 Harvard's doing a great job of keeping the offensive pressure on.

11:47 Vaillancourt gets a breakaway, but her shot is denied. The puck's back in the O-zone for Harvard, and Ryabkina sends a long slapshot in that ricochets off an Eagles defender. There are several chances to bury the rebound, but the Crimson doesn't get anything past Schaus.

12:36 Harvard is keeping good control in the offensive zone on its first power play, but despite the motion, hasn't gotten a good shot off yet. BC is able to clear, and the Crimson's now stuck playing in its own zone.

13:14 BC's Becky Zavisza in the box for roughing.

14:15 Another chance for Harvard, but Schaus nabs junior Kathryn Farni's long slapshot with her glove.

14:42 Sophomore Liza Ryabkina takes the puck all the way up the left boards, and skates in to get a shot on Schaus. Schaus is there, though, and makes an easy body save.

16:01 Kessler and senior defenseman Kati Vaughn get tangled up in the net, but the Eagles aren't able to get a shot off. Harvard's keeping control, but is having trouble clearing the puck out of the defensive zone.

18:23 BC's Green gets off a shot on Kessler, but the junior makes a chest save. Her BC counterpart, Molly Schaus, reciprocates with an almost identical save seconds later. The teams look very evenly matched as the game picks up speed.

20:00 Harvard is sporting new black-and-crimson uniforms. They don't help win the opening faceoff, and BC grabs control to start the game.
