Undergraduate Council campaigning began today at 12:01 a.m., and some campaigns hit the ground running, holding meetings last night and then launching Web sites and postering the campus during the early morning hours.
Dan V. Kroop ’10, the campaign manager for Andrea R. Flores ’10, emphasized last night that the Flores campaign would be “out in force” today.
The chair of the UC Election Commission, Steven T. Cupps ’10, was stuck at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago late into last night, and said he expected the campaigns to adhere to the honor system for the night. [CORRECTION APPENDED]
“We’re going to follow the rules pretty firmly, but there is going to be a logic...and reasonableness,” Cupps said about his plans to enforce campaign regulations.
Voting begins Dec. 12 at noon and ends Dec. 15 at noon. Voting will last three days this year, down from four last year. The campaign period has been extended this year from nine days to 14.
Both Flores and Benjamin P. Schwartz ’10 said their campaigns would be launching Web sites featuring their platforms this morning. Schwartz’s Web site is schwartzbiggers.com and Flores’ is studentstogether.com.
Michael C. Koenigs ’09 said he would be posting his platform on his Web site www.harvardhooligans.com after midnight. The two other candidates did not respond to e-mails last night.
Schwartz said last night that he is excited for the campaign to start.
The campaign will be a “two week debate of ideas, and that will hopefully benefit the College and the Undergraduate Council,” he said.
Koenigs said his campaign will be “going big” tomorrow.
With the start of the campaign comes the race for endorsements—the Koenigs, Schwartz and Flores campaigns all plan to hold endorsement meetings today with student groups including the Harvard College Democrats; Strong Women, Strong Girls; Harvard Students for Israel; and the First Year Social Committee.
Koenigs said he will be accompanied by two body guards to the meetings.
CORRECTION
The Nov. 30 story, "Campaign for UC President Begins," misstated the class year of UC Election Commission chair Steven T. Cupps. He is of the Class of 2009, not 2010.
