Tamara E. Rogers '74, fundraising dean for the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and a close adviser to University President Drew G. Faust, will become Harvard’s vice president for alumni affairs and development, the University announced Friday.

Rogers is a 29-year Harvard veteran. She spent more than two decades in the admissions office and served as director of major gifts for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and associate director of University development. She will assume her new post on Oct. 1.

Rogers will be charged with jump-starting the University’s long-awaited capital campaign, which was delayed several times amid the tumult of former president Lawrence H. Summers’ comments on women in science in 2005 and his battles with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Rogers will replace Robert B. Cashion '81, who took the vice presidency on an interim basis as Faust searched for a permanent replacement. Cashion will resume his duties as an associate vice president and development director for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The search for a new vice president began when Donella M. Rapier, a Summers appointee, resigned in February after four years in office. At the time, Rapier suggested that Faust had asked her to step down.
