Assistant Dean of Harvard College Noel Bisson has been appointed the new Secretary of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), Dean of FAS Michael D. Smith announced Monday.

Bisson, who worked in the Office of Academic Programs, replaces David B. Fithian, who announced in May that he would step down from his post after 12 years at Harvard. Fithian took over as the secretary of the University of Chicago on July 1, where he reports directly to the school’s president and Board of Trustees.

Bisson said she is looking forward to maintaining her job as Assistant Dean in addition to assuming the role as FAS Secretary, because of the varied interactions she will have with the Harvard community.

“In my previous administrative roles I have particularly enjoyed the opportunities I have had to work directly with faculty and students, and I welcome the chance to continue such work in this new position,” Bisson said. “This is an exciting time to be at Harvard, and it is a great privilege for me to move into this new role.”

Smith announced the appointment—which goes into effect immediately—in an e-mail to the faculty.

“[Bisson] has demonstrated a natural talent for university administration and has earned the respect of the faculty, staff, and students in every position she has held,” Smith wrote.

Smith also praised Bisson’s experience in various aspects of the College, from lecturing in the music department to serving on the Faculty Standing Committee on Advising and Counseling.

“I am excited and eager to begin our partnership as we together, along with all of you, move the FAS forward at this time of unique challenge and unique opportunity,” Smith wrote.
