Scherf named All-American at NCAA track and field championships thanks to seventh-place finish in 5,000

Freshman Lindsay Scherf garnered All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the University of Arkansas, by placing seventh in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:09.38.

Scherf qualified for NCAAs by winning the ECAC Championships last weekend, finishing the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:12.14—a personal best. She shaved nearly three more seconds off that time to secure a top-eight finish—the cutoff for All-American honors.

Scherf also received All-American accolades in cross country in the fall.

Entering the event, Scherf was seeded 11th in the 16-woman field, and finished as the top freshman runner in the event.

Columbia’s Caroline Bierbaum placed second in a time of 15:52.53, just over two seconds behind Northern Arizona’s Ida Nilsson.
