Striking, confident, and mysterious—it’s no surprise that the subject of John Sargent’s “Madame X,” a fair, dark-haired woman in a black evening gown, caused a scandal at her first appearance in 1884 and has been a style icon ever since. This year, the Harvard Vestis Council has made Madame X the inspiration for its fashion show in an effort to take her beyond her distinctive black dress.

The four segments of “Haute,” the Vestis Council’s fall fashion show, promise to accommodate a wide range of periods and genres, from Edwardian lace and velvet to the trenchcoats of film noir.

Though the Vestis Council hopes to make this year’s “Haute” more sophisticated than it has been in the past, producers affirm that the show is still focused on fashion at Harvard. The final segment of “Haute” will feature the personal styles of the models, all Harvard students selected by audition. It’s a nice reminder that, though Madame X might be an inspiration, fashion sense at Harvard doesn’t have to be confined to oil paintings.
