CARPENTER'S MATES
DUTIES: After Navy Training and Extended Service
Be able, by use of hand and power tools, to make repairs or replacements of all woodwork on board ship. Know the characteristics of wood used in ship construction, installation and equipment; know the approved uses of all such woods, how to join them and finish them for the jobs in which they are used, and know all the Navy regulations with regard to ship ventilation, painting, damage control, watertight integrity, drainage systems, and the laying and care of linoleum. Understand the work of drydocking, the shoring required preparatory to drydocking and the principles of preservation of wood and wood surfaces used in various parts of the ships.

Complete arithmetic, algebra, plane geometry, applications of solid geometry, trigonometry, and blue-print reading.

SHIPFITTERS
DUTIES: After Navy Training and Extended Service
Use hand and machine tools of the Shipfitter's shop in laying out and making sheet metal work; bend, repair and fit pipes and tubing used on board. Operate fire extinguishers, rescue breathing apparatus. Know location of all bottoms, tanks, ports, hatches, watertight doors, and damage control and safety procedure applicable to these. Understand characteristics of all metals used on board and safety precautions for forge, welding and soldering.

Complete arithmetic, plane geometry, applications of solid geometry, elementary physics as related to heat, expansion, pressure of liquids and ventilation and chemistry.

RADIOMEN
DUTIES: After Navy Training and Extended Service
Be able to operate Navy radio transmitting and receiving equipment, making adjustments for frequencies, be able to adjust, repair and calibrate radio direction finders and sound equipment, and to send and receive on all frequencies used by the Navy. Know how to encipher and decipher Navy messages, how to maintain and care for batteries used with radio equipment and know the functions and the operation of all radio equipment as related to radio communications. Understand the principles of A. C. and D. C. motors and generators, of power transformers, of radio transmitters and receivers, radio direction finders, and the principles of electricity and radio as applied to these.

Complete arithmetic, algebra including logarithms, plane geometry, plane trigonometry, elementary physics with reference to electricity, radio and sound, vacuum tubes, typewriting and English.

YEOMEN
DUTIES: After Navy Training and Extended Services
Take charge of a ship's office and supervise or do all the work required therein including the taking of dictation, the writing of Navy letters, the preparation of standard reports, the duplication of typwritten material, the use of the Navy filing system and the keeping of all personnel records. Know the typewriter, the organization of the ship, current regulations and instructions regarding enlistments, discharges, transfers, and the method of preparing reports. Understand all Navy regulations regarding duties and instructions regarding transportation, travel, discharge, promotion, benefits available to enlisted men, and the procedure necessary to obtain such benefits.

Complete arithmetic, algebra, geometry, English, spelling, typewriting and shorthand.

STOREKEEPERS
DUTIES: After Navy Training and Extended Service
Take charge of storerooms on board ship and direct and assist in the storage, storekeeping, issuing, and preparing typewritten reports upon all stock under the cognizance of the Supply Department. Know the organization of the Supply Department afloat, the publications used by this department, the regulations and instructions with regard to storage, recording reporting, requisitioning and invoicing stocks of the Supply Department afloat; the publications used by this department, the regulations and instructions with regard to storage, recording, reporting, requisitioning and invoicing stocks of the Supply Department. Know materials listed in the Federal Stock Catalog their titles and appropriations under which they are obtained. Understand the regulations and instructions for the administration of a ship's store, the issuing and accounting of clothing and small stores, purchasing afloat, and the laws governing procurement and expenditure of supplies.

Complete arithmetic, typewriting, algebra, trigonometry operation of the adding machine, and physics.
