To the editors:
I wonder what the purpose of Erol Gulay’s Comment (and its accompanying illustration) ("The Misunderstanding of Christ," Feb. 23) could be, if not simply to insult and infuriate. His many accusations spew venom widely without evidence or a coherent argument. Perhaps if Gulay had read the Gospel he claims to understand so well, he would know that Mel Gibson’s interpretation of Christ’s Passion is not (according to reports) a new one. One of the central and beautiful mysteries of Christianity is exactly this triumph of love over sin and violence an interpretation that has been advanced by many before Gibson—by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, to name just a few.
I hope that in the future The Crimson will refrain from publishing words or illustrations that are so unabashedly disrespectful.
