SPORTS BRIEF: Tight end Widman out for rest of season with broken ankle

As sophomore running back Clifton Dawson continues to race into the Harvard record books, he will have to do so for the rest of the season minus his primary lead blocker. Junior fullback Kelly Widman broke his right fibula in the Crimson’s game against Princeton on Saturday and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Widman, who converted from tight end to fullback in the offseason, provided consistent blocking and versatility from the fullback position. Despite catching only two passes through the season’s first six games, Widman’s threat as a receiver opened up options for the Crimson offense and allowed the team to pass out of run formations with ease.

With the loss of Widman and the continued absence of sophomore fullback A.J. Kennedy, who is out for the season with an injured shoulder, Harvard is slightly thin in backfield depth.

Without Widman, junior Mike Lucas may see more time blocking for Dawson, and the Crimson will likely use more single-back formations with two tight ends or three wide receivers in running situations.
