The rain pounded, the wind raged and the drenched Harvard men’s golf team found itself unable to cope with the harsh conditions.
After firing a score of 313 on Monday to finish the first round in 10th place out of 46 teams, the Crimson had a rough day with the weather at the NEIGA Championships in Brewster, Mass. yesterday. The team shot a combined 335 to place 18th after the second and final round of play.
Harvard’s high total reflected the general trend on a soggy day yesterday. But all the blame for the Crimson’s poor shooting could not be attributed to the elements.
“Everyone’s scores were inflated, but I think we could have played a lot better,” captain Chris Wu said.
The team’s experienced players continued to struggle, with Wu and junior D.J. Hynes both carding a 77-83-160 to finish tied for 52nd. Senior Matt Amis also performed weakly, recording a 80-88-168.
Freshman Sam Lissner’s play was the silver lining. While he finished with an 81 yesterday, he shot a solid front nine despite the weather. Only a quadruple bogey on the 15th hole prevented Lissner from having an excellent performance.
“On the back nine, I just got a little bit ahead of myself,” Lissner said.
Harvard winds up its fall season next week at the Toski Invitational in Amherst, Mass. Wu won the tournament last year and will attempt to defend his title. In addition, he hopes that the team as a whole will perform well.
“A lot of guys are slumping at the wrong time,” Wu said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to pull things together this weekend.”
