Football Superlatives

BEST ENTICEMENT TO STAY A FIFTH YEAR

After going nine games without accumulating any stats whatsoever, fullback Collin Blackburn finally was thrown a pass on Saturday. Blackburn, who reportedly plans to apply for a medical hardship and play a fifth season next year, gained five yards on the play, an unusual bit of glory at the mostly thankless position of Harvard fullback. But sorry, Collin—fullback will probably continue to be a glorified lineman in 2003.

WORST ENTICEMENT TO STAY A FIFTH YEAR

In the final game of his career and the last episode in a heart-wrenching soap opera, captain Neil Rose was benched one last time in favor of sophomore Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rose saw his Harvard career end rather modestly, taking the field only once after halftime—to take a knee on the game’s final play.

MOST HAPLESS ATTEMPT AT CROWD CONTROL ENFORCEMENT

By the Boston police officer who, in a painful but hilarious scene, fell off his horse while attempting to restore order to the Harvard crowd that was storming the field. With cops on horseback tipping over left and right, who needs goalposts?

MOST INEVITABLE GAFFE

By maligned Harvard placekicker Anders Blewett, whose missed extra point in the third quarter was the first and last of his career. Despite struggling mightily during his career on field goals, Blewett had made 59 consecutive point-after kicks. The wind blew what would have been No. 60 wide to the right.

BEST SECOND EFFORT, PART I

By Harvard tailback Nick Palazzo, who scored the Crimson’s third touchdown Saturday from one yard out. When the original hole closed up on him, Palazzo stepped back and made another, more determined lunge at the endzone. The second effort was enough to break the plane.

BEST SECOND EFFORT, PART II

By junior punter Adam Kingston. After muffing the snap on a first-quarter punt attempt, Kingston picked up the ball, rolled to his right to evade Yale’s pressure and got off a ground-ball kick from the Harvard 30 that bounced all the way to the Yale 41.

BRAVEST APPEARANCE IN PUBLIC

By Dean of the College Harry R. Lewis ’68. The Grinch Who Stole The Kegs took the field as part of the Harvard band’s halftime show, wielding a whooping stick that he unleashed on an effigy of Yale’s mascot, Handsome Dan. The comedic show of school spirit was enough to spare him the wrath of the student section—well, that and the fact that Lewis’ cameo went largely undetected by the punch-drunk masses who had found other ways to get their buzz.
