Police Log

Jan. 7:

8:19 p.m.--A caller reported that a group of youths had just stolen a beanbag chair from Langdell Hall at Harvard Law School. The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) responded and searched the area, but officers were unable to locate anyone.

7:43 a.m.--Officers investigated a report of a suspicious person near Langdell Hall but were unable to locate the subject.

9:57 a.m.--HUPD officers responded to a gas leak at 51 Brattle St. With assistance from the Cambridge Fire Department, HUPD evacuted the building until the problem could be fixed.

12:21 p.m.--HUPD stopped a suspicious person at the Dental School. After conducting a field interview, officers removed the subject from the building.

2:16 p.m.--Officers removed an unwanted guest from the courtyard at Haskins Hall.

2:19 p.m.--HUPD units assisted Cambridge Police Department officers in searching for a suspect wanted for an indecent assault on Berkeley Street near the Quad. The victim was walking along Berkeley Street from Phillips Street when she was approached from behind and grabbed her in an indecent manner. She was knocked to the ground, and her screams prompted a witness to approach, which scared off the attacker.

Police described the suspect as an dark-skinned Hispanic male in his mid-20s, standing five feet four inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds, with a large round face, very full lips, short straight brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a green jacket and light colored pants at the time of the assault.

Jan. 9:

8:17 a.m.--An HUPD officer at the Medical School responded to a report of a dispute between a motorist and parking attendant. The officer spoke with all parties before leaving the scene.

9:40 p.m. A caller from Au Bon Pain requested that a party locked in the bathroom be removed. HUPD officers responded and removed the subject. He was also given a no trespass warning for Harvard property.

Jan. 10:

3:11 p.m.--A caller reported that cash was stolen from his wallet at the Malkin Athletic Center. The wallet had been in a secured locker, but the lock had been cut off. The responding officer filed a formal report.

Jan. 11:

9:48 a.m. Officer responded to a report of hazardous material on Quincy Street. The Cambridge Department of Public Works responded and fixed the problem.

1:09 p.m.--Officers were dispatched to Gund Hall to take a report of vandalism. The officer reported that two areas on the side of the building and the side of a nearby truck had been "tagged" with graffiti.

Jan. 12:

1:20 a.m.--HUPD officers responded to the rear of Memorial Church after a caller reported a woman screaming. Police found a student horsing around with friends outside Canaday Hall.

Jan. 13:

3:50 a.m.--An officer attempted to stop two suspicious people near Lowell House. One fled and was stopped after a brief chase. Both subjects were interviewed by officers, and one was taken into custody for an outstanding warrant.

2:26 p.m.--A caller reported a smoking washing machine in Winthrop House. HUPD responded and requested that University engineers and the Cambridge Fire Department respond as well. Officials at the scene determined the machine had caught fire after being overloaded with clothes. It was unplugged.

10:51 p.m. An officer checked on a the condition of people on the ice on the Charles River. The officer reported the people were gone upon his arrival.

Jan. 14:

3:04 a.m.--HUPD units responded to a report of an intoxicated student in Eliot House.
