The Harvard Crimson softball team kicked off their season this weekend with a pair of wins over IGP and the Harvard Independent.
Senior Rich Perez led the team to a dramatic come-from-behind victory over IGP Saturday, as The Crimson overcame a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 23-2.
The Crimson finished off the hapless Independent, Harvard's weekly
newsmagazine, with less trouble yesterday. The Crimson's offense exploded for a 23-2 triumph over the overmatched Indy.
Crimson rookie pitcher Christina S. Lewis tamed Indy bats for three innings before giving way to relief ace junior Doug O'Malley.
Junior Mike Volonnino paced the Crimson offense, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Crimson manager and backup right fielder, junior Alan E. Wirzbicki, who had only four errors over the two games, said the weekend boded well for the rest of the season.
"I knew we had IGP when they started resorting to the ringers," he said. "Ernest Hemingway was a real sign of desperation. He's been dead for forty years!"
