On Friday and Saturday, junior Dora Gyorffy will be representing Harvard as she competes in the high jump at the NCAA tournament at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Just two weeks ago, at the Heptagonal Championships, Gyorffy tied the NCAA high jump record, jumping to a height of 1.97 meters (6'5.5") before her shoe tore apart and she was forced to stop. The jump at Heptagonals was a personal record for Gyorffy, and she thinks the success she has recently enjoyed should continue this weekend.
"I am really looking forward to it," Gyorffy said. "I feel in really good shape so I will have the chance to further improve my own record and break the NCAA record."
Gyorffy's biggest competition will be Erin Aldrich of the University of Texas. While she has not jumped nearly as high as Gyorffy has this year--she has only jumped 1.87 meters (6'1.5")--she is the defending champion and has jumped well at the NCAAs in the past.
Gyorffy wants to do well this weekend, but she is also looking forward to just being in the NCAAs.
"Just competing in [the NCAAs] will be exciting," Gyorffy said. "The NCAAs are always a huge meet and it will be fun to jump in that atmosphere."
"I would like to win, and I would like to jump very high naturally," Gyorffy added. "However, the most important thing for me is that, when I leave the field after the event, I want to feel that I did everything I was capable of on that day."
