Cambridge Police announced last week the arrest of the man they believe responsible for a series of 'smash-and-grab' burglaries in the Square.

Police said the 45-year-old man, a resident of the Boston area of Hyde Park was collared after attempting a similar robbery the morning of April 12.

According to a Cambridge Police Department (CPD) statement, at 4:50 a.m., the man was spotted in front of a Radio Shack on Mass Ave. near Central Square.

The man was then seen getting out of his car and throwing a large rock through the window. A "smash-and-grab" burglary involves breaking a store's glass windows and then grabbing everything within reach from the sidewalk.

After throwing the rock, the man was surrounded by police and arrested after a struggle, according to the CPD.

One officer was slightly injured.

The man, who police declined to identify, is accused of having committed a smash-n-grab burglary nearly early the Radio Shack, the Tannery of Brattle Street, and the Swiss Watchmaker three times each during that time.

"Striking every week or two, in the early morning hours, on weekends, the burglar would smash the front door windows of jewelry and clothing stores, grab as much as possible within a minute or two, then flee in a vehicle," according to the CPD statement. The following is a selection from the police logs of the Cambridge Police Department from April 12 to April 18.

April 18

A CPD officer responded to reports of a group of men fighting outside a home at 111 Jefferson Street in East Cambridge at about 1:30 a.m.

When the officer arrived, he called of immediate backup. Every on-duty unit in the city responded. When they arrived, they found the officer slightly injured.

Officers arrested two men, Baxton Fernandes and Duanne Allen, both of Jackson Circle, and charged them with assault and battery on a police officer. That officer was treated and released from the Cambridge City Hospital.

April 17

A resident at 16 Berkely Street reported that someone had set a bag of feces on fire in her yard. An unknown person also threw an egg through her front window, causing $500 in damage.

At 3 a.m., a resident of Dorchester reported that he was struck by a boulder while walking on Mass Ave near the Square. He was not injured. CPD has classified this as a possible assault and battery by means of a boulder.

Also on April 17, a cab driver responding to a pickup request on Cambridge St. reported he was assaulted by two people who got into his cab. The driver told police he asked his riders if they had called for the cab. They told him "no." He then asked them to leave. He claims that one of the people then punched him in the chest three times.

April 16

The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) arrested Ronald Verschaeve, of 189 Middlesex Street in Lowell, on an outstanding warrant from the Fitchburg District Court in Fitchburg, Mass. He was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of a needle.

Also on April 16, Ladi O. Balogun, A Harvard Business School student, was stopped for speeding near Arrow Street by CPD officers. Balogun was given several field sobriety tests, which police said he failed. Balogun was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

April 15

A women's bicycle that had been reported stolen was recovered by the CPD on Ellery Street. Upon checking the registration, they discovered it belonged to a Harvard-affiliated person and contacted the HUPD.

April 14

The CPD arrested the following individuals at the MIT protest for Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji: Kim Meston of Newton, for assault and battery, Mingjo Zhou for assault and battery with a flag pole, and Daja Meston for disorderly conduct.

April 13

A Cambridge resident reports that between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m., an unknown male telephoned his house and said, "I know who you are, I know where you go to school, and I am going to shoot you and you won't ever know who did it."
