While most Harvard students slept late on Saturday morning, the Veritones piled into a bus to Hartford, Conn. to perform with other college singing groups at the New England Showcase.

The Veritones competed at the Immanuel Congregational Church against Brandeis's Voicemale, Connecticut College's William Street Mix, RPI's Rusty Pipes, the University of Illinois' Rip Chords and Skidmore's Bandersnatchers.

Although Skidmore's Bandersnatchers prevailed, Harvard's singers learned valuable style lessons during the showcase.

"It was striking how different the Harvard a cappella scene was," said Hanna L. Stotland '99, the Veritones' business manager.

Unlike the Veritones' black-tie dress and dignified performing demeanor--the Harvard standard--other groups featured overalls and red shirts and campy humor, she said.

"We personally treated it as an opportunity to get ready for our jam coming up this month," said Rob C. Opdycke '99, music director for the group.

The Veritones will be performing in Sanders Theatre on Feb. 26 with the six-person a cappella group Brothers of Kuumba.
