The Harvard men's cross-country team competed this weekend at Bryant College in a tri-meet against Northeastern and a tough Brown team.

In dual meet competition the Crimson runners defeated the Huskies, 35-20. Against Brown, the Crimson ran better than in previous years, but came up on the short end of a 33-24 score.

Captain Scott Muoio once again had a strong showing, coming in third, but freshman Jussi Utriainen stole Muoio's spot on the highlight reel by finishing in an impressive second place.

The Crimson's fine performance bodes well for the rest of the season. Harvard's primary goal is to close the time gap between its first and fifth runners as the year goes on, and after this weekend's showing, it appears headed in the right direction.

Women's Cross-Country

The women's cross-country team also opened its season against Brown, but could not catch the talented Bears squad, falling,42-19.

"We performed well," said captain Margaret Schotte, who was sidelined by a sore calf. "By the first K mark, the lead was held by all Harvard runners."

Saturday also saw strong performances out of Harvard's freshmen, particularly Leeann Hyms and Erin Leonard, who in their first competition brushed off the usual nervousness and ran quite well.

Junior Kate Moynihan stepped up into the leadership role and had a good run, finishing third. Running without their standout captain, the Crimson ran well and showed the potential to have a successful season.
